Route 66

On the Mother Road :: Part 9

IMG_8040

California. Here we come.

IMG_8045

Route 66 always welcomes us.

IMG_8058

Honey.

IMG_8072

I love to see the lizards in the desert! Check out that tail!

IMG_8082

Tammy ❤ Scummy.

IMG_8095

Beaten and broke down.

IMG_8098

Oh Canada!

IMG_8119

IMG_8125

IMG_8152

Don’t do it!

IMG_8156

What an awesome trailer!

IMG_8161

IMG_8165

The bottles are lovely, but look at that printing press!

IMG_8166

Cacti.

IMG_8178

Insulators.

IMG_8180

N Roll.

IMG_8181

I liked this miner. He made out big on his claim!

IMG_8182

So many pretties.

IMG_8191

No one else was at the Bottle Forest so it was nice to explore without getting the the way of other people….or them getting in the way of my photos!

IMG_8197

I think the cacti was my favorite!

IMG_8209

Well?

IMG_8233

Madonna of the Trail.

IMG_8239

Kitty sittin’.

IMG_8252

I didn’t see much of the Hollywood sign, but I did see it! LA was not fun to drive in.

IMG_8269

We made it to the end of the trail! I drove all…ALL…of Route 66. I thought I would cry when we made it to Santa Monica Pier, but LA sucked the life out of me, so I had no tears to shed.

IMG_8278

Santa Monica Pier.

IMG_8282

This pigeon boy posed for us! What a way to end the trip!

On the Mother Road :: Part 8

IMG_7756

Groceries.

IMG_7758

Prairie dog!

IMG_7759

So cute! there were hundreds of these guys on this part of the drive.

IMG_7768

Cute tummy.

IMG_7770

Checking out their surroundings.

IMG_7796

DeSoto’s Salon.

IMG_7794

We were actually able to eat here! In the middle of nowhere!

IMG_7797

Route 66 Grill.

IMG_7800

Land. Well played.

IMG_7802

Very old 66.

IMG_7806

Tree in the middle of the road.

IMG_7813

It’s hard to see but there’s a cow and her baby under that big bushy tree.

IMG_7820

Seligman, AZ.

IMG_7821

We ate snow cones here.

IMG_7822

I have a really strong hatred for Betty Boop. I just don’t get why she’s a thing.

IMG_7823

Eric bought a real Route 66 road sign here!

IMG_7826

Cars.

IMG_7830

Grand Canyon Caverns! Yes we took the tour! I love me some caverns.

IMG_7843

They actually have concerts underground! And there’s a hotel room you can rent! Sadly it was booked the night we were there or I think we would have spent way too much money to sleep underground.

IMG_7866

It was a really clear night at our campsite. I tried some long exposure photography.

IMG_7870

And I caught a passing train!

IMG_7892

Bert’s Country Dancing.

IMG_7896

I love this section of 66.

IMG_7900

Old cop car.

IMG_7903

We explored.

IMG_7911

Eric really wants a car just like this.

IMG_7913

Hackberry General Store. We bought some old license plates here and I bought some old Arizona Highways magazines.

IMG_7914

Hackberry.

IMG_7935

On the way to Oatman, AZ!

IMG_7948

Watch out for wild burros!

IMG_7970

I love the desert. There was actually water coming from a spring here. And there were goldfish in the water!

IMG_7982

A popular place to spread ashes. They have quite the view.

IMG_7986

Welcome to Oatman!

IMG_7987

i told you there were wild burros!

IMG_7991

This gal was very pregnant.

IMG_8007

The burros are somewhat tame. They always expect you to give them treats. Most of the stores in town sell treats for the burros. Some of the really young babies had little notes taped to their heads that said…”Don’t feed me!” They just need mama’s milk.

IMG_8012

Look at those big ears!

IMG_8014

It was soooo hot here! I was one sweaty beast.

IMG_8025

Just hanging out on the stoop snoozing.

On the Mother Road :: Part 7

IMG_7182

Good morning! What a way to start a day, huh?

IMG_7188

The sky in the southwest never disappoints!

IMG_7206

A church blending in with the hills.

IMG_7221

Moccasins for the entire family!

IMG_7224

The Continental Divide!

IMG_7231

Blue Spruce Lodge.

IMG_7237

A cowboy Muffler Man.

IMG_7246

Arizona.

IMG_7251

Friends along the road.

IMG_7387

Geodes! I love rocks and minerals so the rock shops in Arizona were super exciting!

IMG_7388

Rock Shop dinos.

IMG_7391

I bought some Arizona petrified wood at this shop.

IMG_7392

More dinos and geodes.

IMG_7397

The Wigwam Motel was our home for the evening!

IMG_7400

The happy (and tan!) couple!

IMG_7405

Wigwam sunset.

IMG_7407

The motel has old cars stationed throughout the parking lot.

IMG_7412

Morning dinos.

IMG_7416

Rawr!

IMG_7420

So much petrified wood!

IMG_7430

Pow Wow Trading Post.

IMG_7434

Bucket of Blood Street!!

IMG_7436

b Horsehead Crossing.

IMG_7441

Inside our Wigwam. They’re actually quite a bit bigger than they look from the outside.

IMG_7462

An old campground.

IMG_7473

Here it is! Jackrabbit, AZ.

IMG_7474

This side of the billboard needs some loving!

IMG_7476

Eric rode the rabbit.

IMG_7483

And I hugged the rabbit.

IMG_7506

On 66 in Winslow, Arizona.

IMG_7511

Do you remember that song by the Eagles called “Take it easy?”

IMG_7512

“Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see. It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me.” Take it easy.

IMG_7526

Broken down map.

IMG_7531

I’m not sure what this was, but I’ll take it!

IMG_7532

Giant dreamcatcher!

IMG_7536

We took a tour of Meteor Crater. It’s impressive, but you might not be able to tell that from the photo.

IMG_7551

Storm clouds over the crater.

IMG_7559

Please slow down! Baby calves on roadway.

IMG_7560

Two Guns, AZ.

IMG_7567

Old mountain lion cages for tourists to gawk at mountain lions. That’s just rude.

IMG_7588

See? Mountain lions.

IMG_7596

Super cute graffiti!

IMG_7601

Twin Arrows, AZ.

On the Mother Road :: Part 6

IMG_6683

Good morning, Tucumcari!

IMG_6695

Can you spot the little lizard?

IMG_6706

Outside of Tucumcari we stopped at an old swimming pool.

IMG_6728

Broken down.

IMG_6729

Wilkerson’s.

IMG_6731

Church in Cuervo, NM.

IMG_6744

Old 66. What a view!

IMG_6748

The road REALLY deteriorated. The Yaris is pretty much an ATV.

IMG_6753

We were way out in the middle of nowhere. We didn’t pass one car. At one point we stopped and turned the car off. You could literally just hear the wind. Nothing else. Those kinds of experiences make you love life and the ability to travel!

IMG_6756

We had beautiful weather while on this road.

IMG_6780

Trust someone, Little Robot.

IMG_6784

About an hour after exiting that gravel 66 road we encountered some hail!

IMG_6785

There were some incredible downpours throughout the day in this part of New Mexico. Look at that water!

IMG_6792

Pecos National Historic Park…and some rather threatening clouds.

IMG_6796

You could actually use the ladder and step down into the kiva.

IMG_6803

Inside! It was so cool underground.

IMG_6805

Ruins.

IMG_6808

There was some construction going on around the ruins. I think they were (hopefully) trying to restore more parts of the ruins.

IMG_6811

Note the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the background.

IMG_6815

Blooms.

IMG_6819

I was on snake patrol. But I only saw some red ants.

IMG_6823

Lovely colors!

IMG_6907

We also visited Glorietta Pass Battlefield which is close to the Pecos ruins.

IMG_6914

St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe!

IMG_6923

Santa Fe is littered with beautiful buildings.

IMG_6937

I really wanted to buy one of these cute little bunnies! They were $80 a piece though, so I just settled for a photograph.

IMG_6943

We hiked La Bajada in New Mexico. This is a famous Route 66 road.

IMG_6967

Morning on La Bajada.

IMG_6979

Madonna of the Trail in Albuquerque, NM!

IMG_6996

The Desert Sands Motor Hotel.

IMG_7003

Gorgeous!

IMG_7005

We were in Albuquerque on July 4th. Fei’s Cafe is a vegan cafe that was sadly closed for the Fourth.

IMG_7006

But Mint Tulip was open! This was our first time visiting Mint Tulip. We had lunch and then ice cream. And then we went back later for milkshakes. Oh my! Vegan goodness galore!

IMG_7023

Albuquerque had a big fireworks display that we stayed for. We also had some fries and corn on the cob.

IMG_7059

You could see storms rolling in as night approached. Check out the lightning!

IMG_7091

Happy 4th!

IMG_7099

It started to rain right before the fireworks display started. People started to scream and run. I guess people in Albuquerque aren’t used to the rain.

IMG_7139

Eric and I crawled under a picnic table to watch the fireworks while not getting wet!

In the morning I spotted that nasty little critter when we packed up the tent. OMG gross. Go away little guy!

On the Mother Road :: Part 3

IMG_5789

Route 66 emblem on the pavement near John’s Modern Cabins.

IMG_5794

John’s Modern Cabins…or what’s left of them.

IMG_5795

We had to walk through some brush to get to the cabins. That was a bad idea when we realized we had ticks all over us. I was so creeped out until I showered that night. I checked every inch of me and every inch (inside and out!) of my clothing for those pesky ticks.

IMG_5799

John’s not so Modern Cabins.

IMG_5839

An awesome No Trespassing sign directed at one guy! Burn!

IMG_5843

The Munger Moss is one of the most famous motels on 66. We sadly didn’t spend the night here.

IMG_5861

Rest Haven Court.

IMG_5869

One of two turtle rescues we performed on the trip! This guy was crossing a busy road and we helped him along.

IMG_5889

Antique.

IMG_5894

Fantastic fence along 66!

IMG_5901

Glass bottles in cement. I would love to do this someday.

IMG_5903

This was in a little “village” type thing. The guy who built the village collected old buildings and cars to make a town of his own.

IMG_5907

I love the paint of the buildings and bird houses.

IMG_5911

Planes and automobiles.

IMG_5914

Shiny.

IMG_5915

This lovely lady was perched atop the airplane.

IMG_5917

Sassy gal!

IMG_5924

More fabulous sculptures in the little village.

IMG_5928

Happy little car.

IMG_5941

Highway Patrol.

IMG_5943

Moon barn.

IMG_5944

Mail Pouch Tobacco ad.

IMG_5953

Probably the most famous drive-in on Route 66! There was a weird guy watching us the whole time we were taking photos. I think he was the cranky caretaker.

IMG_5956

Carthage, MO.

IMG_5963

Mater!

IMG_5964

Palace Drug Store ghost sign.

IMG_5966

Murder brothel.

IMG_5973

Bridge in Kansas.

IMG_5981

A very bare and beautiful downtown.

IMG_5984

Conoco Station.

IMG_5991

Original 9 foot road segment on 66. Also known as the Sidewalk Highway!

IMG_5996

At least we know!

IMG_6000

Cafe.

IMG_6003

Possibly old tourist cabins? Lovely though!

IMG_5476

Lincoln, IL. – Taken from the Roadside America website… “It commemorates the day in 1853 when the future 16th President, who was then just an Illinois lawyer, christened his namesake community by slicing open a melon and pouring its juice onto the ground. In agreeing to lend his name to this place, Abe reportedly said, “I never knew anything named Lincoln that amounted to much.” “
